The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan is a non-governmental member organisation which has been working with development programmes in Afghanistan since 1982. The activities are funded by the Swedish governmental aid agency Sida,by EU, UN, company sponsoring and by SCA's own fundraising.

Several killed as school comes under fire in clash between police and insurgents in Paktia

(Kabul 3 May 2004)
A school in Ibrahim Khil in Zurmat district, Paktia province, was attacked in a nightly gun battle between Afghan police and unknown forces on 1 May. Several police and one civilian are reported to have been killed in the clash, which also involved US helicopters firing rockets to defend the post from the attackers. The school is supported by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) and has 366 students in classes in classes 1-6, including 59 girls.

SCA Condemns Recent Attacks on Girls' schools
(Kabul 1 april 2004)
In the past month, three girls' schools supported by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) have been attacked and completely or partially
destroyed by unknown assailants.
On 19 February, at night, Jar-e-Shah Baba girls' school in Keshem, Badakshan, was attacked and burnt to the ground. On 10 March Sangana school in Rokha, Kapisa province, was bombed and three classrooms were completely destroyed. In the latest attack on 17 March, Harmal Girls school in Laghman was targeted by armed men who tied up three guards and set fire to doors, windows, school books and official documents. No person was injured in the
attacks.

SCA Women´s Day Appeal: Mother and Child health care in desperate need of funds

Afghanistan has the highest maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the world. According to a recent UN study, an estimated 1,700 women die per 100,000 live births. To improve the health of women and children the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan currently supports 40 specialised mother and child health care (MCH) clinics in rural areas in eastern, northern and south-eastern Afghanistan. Yet these efforts are just a fraction of what is needed to save women's lives in Afghanistan.

SCA moves to Kabul after 21 years in Peshawar

-This is a historic move. We have been waiting for this moment for 21 years. We almost moved in during the early 90s, but that time we were stopped by the escalating civil war. Now we strongly believe things have changed, there is a legitimate government and security in the capital is good, says Peter Bulling, acting Country Director of SCA.

SCA condemns armed attack on school consultants
(SCA Info Peshawar, 2 March 2003)
On Saturday 1 March an SCA Toyota pickup was attacked in Tangi, Wardak province, between Ghazni and Kabul. Armed men fired several shots at the vehicle, which was carrying equipment for a teachers training course, two SCA school consultants and a driver. No person was injured in the attack, which is believed to have been specifically targeted at foreigners and NGO property.

Interview with Bengt Kristiansson - New Head of SCA

The board of SCA has appointed a Secretary General, Bengt Kristiansson, who will assume overall responsibility for the entire organization. This includes overseeing the implementation of programmes inside Afghanistan, as well as leading activities in Sweden.
- I am deeply honoured to have been selected for such an important role. The Swedish Committee has a long and impressive track record in Afghanistan and has done a great deal to empower Afghans and promote development over the years. With all the recent changes and the existence of a new government we now have a huge responsibility to participate in the process to create stable institutions and thereby promote a lasting peace. Without peace and stability no lasting development can take place.
